L.I.E.S don Ron Morelli claws together another batch of shrouded aural detritus for his latest full-length run out on Dominik Fernow’s Hospital Productions entitled A Gathering Together. As with earlier productions Spit and Periscope Blues, Morelli is insistant to distance himself from the ‘floor focused output of his label in favour depraved industrial rhythms constructed from of a baron, dismal sound palette. Throughout the piece is devoid of optimism, preferring to burrow into the undergrowth with the blackened opening drones of ‘Cross Waters’ and the clattering metal oscillations on ‘In Secret’ and ‘New Dialect’. A grim sense of claustrophobia underpins the tense atmosphere of ‘Desert Ocean’ followed by dense, opaque noise blanket of ‘To Celebrate The Storm’, and whilst A Gathering Together may not be the most comforting of listens, it is a true, personal reflection of an artist who is less than optimistic about the state of humanity.
