Romanian producer Cosmin TRG has a way with mood. There’s always been a starry, organic sheen to his work, which has elevated it above the realm of mere functional dance floor fodder.

On ‘Gordian’ this bright and organic quality is at its most fully realised. As on his last album ‘Simulat’, most of it is anchored by a rock steady 4/4 pulse. The pinging electronics of title track “Gordian” backed by hefty techno thunks, and “Desire Is Sovereign” with its bubbling, rolling beat leave no doubt in his mastery of the form.

All in all though, his touch is lighter, the mood more experimental. “Epsilon, Epsilon” is a slice of crackling IDM that sounds like it was made in a wind tunnel. “Noise Code” is perhaps the most quietly accomplished moment; a hypnotic chiming riff over lightly fizzing noise and plenty of odd little electronic squiggles to hold a listener's interest. On ‘Gordian’, Cosmin TRG shows he’s got range. It’s a fine album that shows how music tooled for a dance floor can be colourful and personal too.
