Combining a focus more heavily indebted to electronic manipulations, jazz, krautrock and classical music, ‘Amnesiac’ was Radiohead fifth studio album. Given the bands established identity, ‘Amnesiac’ finds Radiohead in exploratory mode, indulging in experimentation and an open attitude to the possibilities of sound. Influences come as far and wide as the Smiths, 1940s harmony groups and American jazz artist, Charlie Mingus. Opening track, ‘Packt Like Sardines in a Crushed Tin Box’ builds upon compressed loops and heavily processed Autotune vocals, the classic ‘Pyramid Song’ makes use of newly added piano keys, ‘Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors’ experiments with found sounds and looping, whilst ‘Dollar and Cents’ finds abstract life-forms swirling in heavily manipulated forms.
