Shifting gears from sci fi themes of mysticism and ambient love letters to changing natural landscapes, Loverboy finds Meemo Comma grounded in the euphoric and vibrant reality of nineties dance music. As the titular Loverboy moves through rooms in the club, the music flips from high octane party records to 4am post-rave comedowns, and twitchy beat experiments bracketing the acts. ‘Cloudscape’ opens with reverent vocals and zapping synths, torn up by booming, folding beats. Timestretched breakbeats descend into the bowels of a clock-less club basement on ‘Ignite’, before thundering synths and rhythms light up the dancefloor haze on the title track.
