It has taken six years for the followup to James K’s debut album PET to manifest, and her artistry has only grown more visceral in that time. With Random Girl, it’s clear that coherence isn’t the point, but rather indulgence in the haphazard scatterings of harsh noise uppercuts, shimmering drones, and digitally mediated mediaeval vocal passages. Heaviness and weightlessness are explored in equal measure, as the collapsing dream pop on ‘Life Of A Fly’ morphs into the shredded metallic textures of ‘Marketa’, from serene to serrated in the blink of an eye.
