Three years have passed since Mark Nelson’s last record A Son, and he now presents an even more stripped back set of guitar tracks for his ninth Pan American album. At times melancholy, at others bright and optimistic, The Patience Fader places humming guitar tones centre stage, with support from hazy synth and harmonica textures. ‘Swimming in a Western Hotel’ opens with a lo-fi, calming atmosphere, evoking a sense of basking in heatwaves, lazing dreamily in open air, meanwhile the Spanish tinge of acoustic guitar on ‘Memorizing, Memorizing’ finds rushes of fingers fluttering across strings laden with emotional catharsis.
