Less than a year after their debut netted a Mercury Prize nomination for shaking up London’s thriving post-punk scene with visions of klezmer and post-rock, Black Country, New Road concentrate their grandiosity into a follow-up as achingly beautiful as it is overwhelming.

Aside from its first three songs, which at times resemble the bombast of Los Campesinos! on a Philip Glass kick, Ants From Up There thrives in its restraint. Highlights like “Bread Song” and triumphant closer “Basketball Shoes” use their run times with purpose, expanding and contracting around singer Isaac Wood’s impassioned delivery. Considering Wood’s amicable departure from the band days before the album’s release, Ants is especially bittersweet as a document of a band at their most synced up, undeniably fulfilling on their hyped initial promise.
