Schwebungssummer is a brooding record from Hainbach (Stefan Paul Goetsch), a collection of “Kovid Krautrock” which utilises the same sound palette as Hainbach’s previous Misc. Records drop Impulsgenerator but freights those synth tones with a sense of dark portent.

As track titles such as ‘Out Of Darker Days’ and ‘It Will Stay Dark’ intimate, there is an ominous mood that stalks throughout Schwebungssummer. The Gothic majesty of Hainbach’s production here is derived from both the ornate synthscapes he creates and also the manner in which he washes his productions with cavernous swells of reverb. Entries such as Schwebungssummer’s title-track are kosmische epics which sound far grander than the one-man-and-his-synths approach might suggest, their interlocking modulars twisting up towards the heavens.

Indeed, some of the tracks here leave the pulsating electronics behind to journey into the murky hinterlands of dark ambient, noise and industrial music. The aforementioned ‘It Will Stay Dark’, for instance, is built from a melange of flickering bass pulses, grainy textural treatments and spare piano lines. It’s a fittingly eerie way in which to close out Schwebungssummer, a record where even the more techno-facing entries - ‘Speed Ballad’, ‘Blood Rush’ - come cloaked with mystery.

Hainbach’s Schwebungssummer is a collection of tense, ominous electronic compositions that "embrace anxiety, the mad rush of adrenaline useless in a crowded subway, the joy of jerky movements in ill-lit clubs, and the inevitable disaster”.
