Fatima Al Qadiri’s score for Mati Diop’s Atlantics evolves her practice in exciting new ways. For the movie, a tale of love amid humanitarian crisis which won the Grand Prix du Jury at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Al Qadiri sticks to her usual sound-palette of eerie synths but uses them in a manner that is more naked than on her occasionally obfuscated studio LPs. Tracks like ‘Boys In The Mirror’ come off like nocturnal, haunting updates of Angelo Badalamenti’s compositions for David Lynch.
