Fatima Al Qadiri returns to Hyperdub with Medieval Femme, the follow up to her ten track outing Shaneera on the same label in 2017. Medieval Femme takes its inspiration from the classical poetry of Arab women, recontextualising the visions, melodies and spirit of an Islamic past into an expansive, futurist sound. There’s a dreamlike lucidity which flows in abundance throughout the album. Tracks like ‘Stolen Kiss of a Succubus’ demonstrate her immense artistry and the realisation of the concept at its peak - delicate bowed melodies intertwine with foreboding dark synth waves. It’s part soundtrack, part ambient, part hauntingly beautiful vocal sweeps.
