Galcher Lustwerk has been one of the most distinctive voices in house music for a few years now. We mean that literally - the New York producer’s penchant for draping his tracks in lackadaisical raps makes his beats instantly recognisable. On Information, his third LP, Lustwerk doubles down on this aesthetic while gently prodding at the boundaries of his signature sound.
It wouldn’t be a Lustwerk LP if it wasn’t served with a generous helping of deep house. Tracks like ‘Another Story’ and ‘Overpay, Overstay’ coast along on the wooziest instrumentals, all gently pattering drums and washed-out keys. They’re pretty and dreamy, but while Lustwerk’s delivery matches the feel we sometimes find his lyrics painting a darker picture - ‘Another Story’, for instance, sees him muttering about the problems that dog his life in NYC.
Lustwerk’s dabblings in other genres give Information good variation. ‘Plane View’ and ‘Thermonics’ are neo-soul tunes with zoned-out vibes while there’s something of Thundercat’s fusion-hop to the comparatively lively ‘Cig Angel’. ‘I See A Dime’ and ‘Fathomless Irie’ are club tracks which increase the pace a little as well as pushing Lustwerk’s vocals to the back of the mix, a space in which they can augment rather than dominate. However, while Lustwerk might switch up his style across Information, his charisma and authorial voice ensure that the record coheres as a whole.
Galcher Lustwerk’s new LP Information is another set of enigmatic, lights-low jams.
