It’s fully six years since the release of Runner, the last LP by Chicago twee-pop group The Sea And Cake. As such, Any Day represents a welcome return for the band. It features eleven charming tracks of gently lilting indie not dissimilar to Belle & Sebastian. The trio’s love of jazz is still apparent in the music of Any Day - check the splashy cymbals and click-clacking drums of the title track - but this influence has always been the ace up the group’s sleeve rather than a dominant aesthetic principle. As such, this allows them to focus on the songcraft, which they deliver with great aplomb. Eleven albums in and they’ve still not lost the knack.
