Having plugged away in his native Chicago for around a decade now, including heading up the respected Kimochi Sound label (Benjamin Brunn, Strategy), Area has more than earned his spot on Idle Hands. He makes good on the opportunity with a two-track release that balances sprightly drum work with some deft melodies. ‘rlgl’ is a perky number in the vein of Idle’s recent Shanti Celeste release, and the way that the spongy bassline props up neat Jan Jelinek-style loops is most pleasing. On the flip, ‘Notice’ takes a similar approach while shifting the rhythmic focus away from house and into techno territory.
