Crump returns to Idle Hands two years after the Ice & Spheres EP. ‘Charcoal’ is a tune as earthy as its title suggests. Bar a sparse bassline there’s very little in the way of tuned instrumentation here, with Crump relying instead on a crisp garage shuffle and curious atonal samples to give the track motion. It’s an oddly intriguing track reminiscent of Metrist. ‘Charcoal’s B-side ‘Bones’ brings in some thin, reedy keyboards which give the track a bit of a Jan Jelinek flavour. Let’s call it micro-garage.
