Lee Bannon, now recording as Dedekind Cut, continues his extraordinary evolution as a producer, having taken in everything from dusty golden age hip-hop to leftfield ambient and experimental jungle. Honestly, everything he touches is worth listening to, and new cassette-only dark ambient EP American Zen is no exception. It first found a home on Ron Morelli’s Hospital Productions imprint and now on Ninja, the perfect places for this bleak artefact. ‘American zen 1&2’ deals in cosmic drones and squeaking percussion, with frequent ruptures in the sonic fabric. ‘Caution’ piles on layers to the point where you really have to strain to pick out some of the individual elements in these gorgeous painterly washes. The Kosmische drift of ‘So far.. so good’ is punctured by massive drum hits caught like blazing beacons in the distance, and strange vocal snippets beamed in from some battered VHS gathering dirt in a landfill.
