The great Can man Irmin Schmidt had himself a significant film composing career alongside steering the highly influential German outfit. This compilation was first issued in 2006 (by Spoon, a self-release vehicle for Can members) and is now revived by the mighty Mute label. Spanning Schmidt’s OST work between 1978-1993, the FORTY-FOUR pieces here will take you through psyched-out percussion jams, haunted, romantic string arrangements, weirdo folk-musik, erotic musak (there’s a track called ‘G. String’), Berlin Exotica, sad classical piano, synth-and-Spanish guitar liaisons (oh yes), and much much more. Evocative, provocative sounds from a real master.
