Released by Warp in association with Principe, the CARGAA compilation series showcases some of the mutant underground club music emerging from Lisbon. Translated as ‘charge’ (with an extra ‘a’ added in reference to an AA battery), the word ‘cargaa’ is used to describe the city’s emerging music scene. Where earlier entries into the CARGAA series featured artists who’d started to establish themselves on the international circuit (such as DJ Marfox, DJ Nigga Fox, and Nidia Minaj), the third and final entry focuses on weirder, wilder, less well-known artists from the local movement, each making their vinyl debut. The highlights include ‘Drena’, a killer riddim from DJ Dotorado and DJ Teklas that seems to keep tripping over itself, as well as a piece of sparse, raw funk from DJ Nervoso called ‘Buzizz’, while K30 demonstrates a deeper side to the sound with his contribution ‘Familia Do Guetto’.
