XL Recordings demonstrate their still-hot eye for new talent with this kaleidoscopic debut from Vegas native Shamir Bailey. When he first come through, it was Bailey’s soulful tones and animated character which caught the attention of critics and fans. For Ratchet, that character is fully out from behind the curtain with a series of slices of floor-facing house-indebted bangers that look set to dominate the summertime. From the cowbell-rattling euphoria of lead single On The Regular to the glorious club glow of Call It Off, this is euphoria in polychrome. Shamir also takes his foot off the pedal and lets his vocal shine through on Darker to create a debut that is rich in both character and pure songwriting promise.
