After forming in London in 1994, singer Brian Molko, guitarist-bassist Stefan Olsdal and English drummer Robert Schultzberg released their self-titled debut album Placebo in 1996 - the only one before Schultzberg was replaced by Steve Hewitt. With Molko’s by now iconic vocals extolling teenage angst, college rock melodies expressing deepest weltschmerz and US-producer Brad Wood adding Chicago’s grittiness to the prog rock riffs, it’s not only the band’s style-forming, but also one of the decade’s genre-defining full-lengths.
