Ralph Cumbers, perhaps better know as Bass Clef, rolls out his Some Truths moniker for a go on the excellent Mordant Music label. With a title like a lost beat poem and released via a label that deals in obscurity, Some Friends I Lost... showcases Cumbers’ freakier, more experimental sides. On ‘Too Much Bone In Your Skull’, he stretches analogue tones into oblivion, creating something from nothing. ‘Quaalude And Fugue State’ channels both the classic BBC Radiophonic Workshop and dead-eyed rockers Suicide, while ‘Music For Trepanning’ conjures a gothic club night seen through the eyes of the severely medicated. The relatively neat dub-tech number ‘Section 12(2)’ and snakelike ‘What Fresh Hell Is This?’ stand out as well.
