Howard Bernstein, aka Howie B, arrives on his own imprint for his seventh studio album, having worked with everyone from Annie Lennox to Bjork in the past. ‘Down With the Dawn’ is an album of twisted experimental electro that nonetheless manages to maintain a pop sheen, its rougher edges realised in deadly high definition. ‘Ganzi’ evidences the producer on searing form, a throbbing jack grounding swarms of stuttering machine plucks which swell out into strange bursts of rough vocoder sounds, but ‘Frankies City’ is the highlight, a space-age synth study that impresses with a tough yet funky groove.
