Returning to the acoustic stylings of Carrie & Lowell, Sufjan Stevens presents his latest solo studio album Javelin. With an intimate crew, he ekes out equally personal feelings: piano notes pirouette between solemn chords on ‘So You Are Tired’, with splatters of instruments and vocal harmonies supporting his close miked, breathy vocals and vanguard songwriting, before the song widens in blossoming arrangements. As is usual with Stevens’ penchant for emotionally exacting music in all shades, Javelin throws lyrics like a spear through the heart.
