Tunisian multi-hyphenate Deena Abdelwahed follows up her critically acclaimed 2018 novel Khonnar with a new LP of forward-thinking club music for the InFiné label entitled Jbal Rrsas. Delving further into many of the themes expressed in the book, Jbal Rrsas finds Abdelwahed making good on the promise of her much-hyped DJ sets where classic rave meets traditional Tunisian and other North African instrumentation. Collaborators like the composer Khalil Hentati add colour and texture, but it’s Abdelwahed’s vision that really shines here, placing music in a social and political context all its own that could also level a club.
