Following Icons (one of Bleep’s top albums of 2021), and recontextualising tracks from it, Eli Keszler takes music made in deep, collective isolation and brings it to the forefront of collective experience: the stage. LIVE is more than just a live album but a return to the living, with two continuous improvisational performances from Sónar Barcelona 2022 and Pace Gallery, Manhattan, 2023 marking some of Keszler’s first festival and exhibition appearances since that fateful year 2020. Accompanied by elaborate visuals and sonic sculptures, audiences stepped into “a glorious and dystopic western world”, with pure soundwaves from Keszler and co flying at and embracing them.

‘Barcelona Part I’ opens with mystical and mysterious poise. Wooden thunks lie underneath percussion skittering like a creature clicking its tongue, or perhaps the cracking of ice in rapid, fluid motions. Washing waves of saxophone-esque breath pass over, reverent strikes of gongs, cymbals, and bells toll, creating a vast sense of space as clusters of ticks and sandy tones travel through the air. Things get more destructive with the crackles of thunder and fireworks as the pace quickens, and booms of bass frequencies and smithereens of rhythm echo, ripple, and multiply the velocity and volume of the performance.

‘Manhattan Part I’ traipses in more cautiously, emerging from the rubble. For this performance, Keszler collaborated with artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer for their Sync audiovisual piece, where each of his intricate, flickering drum hits caused an array of 3000 lightbulbs in the artist’s pulse Topology installation to spark and scintillate in time. Electricity flows in between the muted bells and scattered shards of Keszler’s drumming, amplifying his unique musical presence and adding new dimensions to the immersive soundworld he has constructed.
