Matthew Dear’s fourth full-length album, his first since 2010’s ‘Black City’, also out on Ghostly International, comes shot through with that inimitable Dear dose of striking character – immediately recognisable and completely addictive. ‘Beams’ sounds instantly more light-spirited than its predecessor with sun-drenched synths and dynamic dance floor motifs counteracting Dear’s oddball detailing and leftfield juxtapositions.
