Stones Throw continues their part in the career renaissance of legendary producer J Rocc with a new LP entitled Beatitudes. With vocal cuts chopped from sermons both religious and secular, J Rocc built himself something sacred, a spiritual service to the power of the beat. Tracks like the slo-mo hip-hop loop ‘The Preacher’ take this literally, while others like ‘Listen To The Music’ simply worship the sound of a rock solid drum break. On Beatitudes, he weaves a devotional beat tape, stitching together motivational sermons with slick bass guitar riffs, quivering string and choir samples, and above all else those crisp hip hop loops. ‘Freedom’ finds pitched up choral vocals shining a light on rejuvenating beat loops, while on ‘Listen To The Music’ piano keys do pirouettes over boom bap drums.
