New York drop band Vampire Weekend released their debut album for XL back in 2008. Inside the construction of the bands nimble, clean songs and intelligent lyrics you can hear the Congolese soukous of acts such as Franco or the psychedelic highlife of Nigerian King Sunny Ade. These are perhaps the most obvious influences, but they seem quite natural techniques to draw emotion and mood out of their songs. What is more the band also have beautiful orchestral arrangements at times and use delicate and unusual instruments to fill out their quite elegant, clear minimalism.
