Having already set a gold standard for vivid and viscous techno in 2020 with The Golden Sea, Birmingham legend Surgeon returns to Ilian Tape with more raw innovation on the galaxy-minded Europa Code. ‘Winged Assassin’ heads up the release with a rolling beat and a wavy synth lead chased by menacing pads, while ‘Crater 01’ sees Surgeon morph the rhythm into further metallic discordance. ‘Place Of Angels’ aims for the moon with its nebula-thick bass and spacey backdrop, as ‘Europa Code’ rounds off the EP with a low-key hypnotic groove and a smattering of chill-out vibes.
