The multi-talented singer, producer and director returns with The Fifth Season. Despite taking a notably more ethereal tact than on her industrially-minded debut Ancestral Boy, the ashen pop experimentalism on the torch-lit songs of The Fifth Season nevertheless glow with a deep-set sense of fury and vulnerability that belies its sonic tenderness. Lafawndah’s intimate vibrato sends ‘Old Prayer’ vacillating wildly across the air, and carries through into the swampy heave and restless Steve Reich percussion of ‘Don’t Despair’ and ‘The Stillness, pairing freeform abstraction with her unflinching auteurship. Is there anything Lafawndah can’t do?
