A rather exciting record from Keleketla! here, one which moves out from a core collaboration between Coldcut and a group of South African musicians that includes Sibusile Xaba and rapper Yugen Blakrok. Keleketla!’s eponymous LP takes in performers from Nigeria (including the late, great drummer Tony Allen), West Papua, the U.S.A. and the United Kingdom (including Shabaka Hutchings). As a result, the sonics of the album are mixed, with a core style pitched somewhere between jazz, Afrobeat and high-life inflected by turns with influences from kwaito, chamber music, gqom and more.
