Quietly self-released in 1996, Test(e) is, in essence, Lowfish’s debut work in everything but name. First touted as a demo and eventually fallen through the cracks of time after a lengthy and arduous negotiation period with prospective label Skam, it eventually propelled Gregory De Rocher to drop his Pest(e) moniker and form his own imprint, Suction. Yet despite the cassette’s position in long-out-of-print limbo, Test(e) bares all the innovative, quivering glitched-out techno characteristics we’d soon come to associate with Lowfish. Would it be too far a stretch to call it essential? Absolutely not.
