The latest drop on Mule Musiq offshoot Studio Mule is another collaboration with Johnny’s Disk Record. Johnny’s was a bespoke jazz imprint that operated in the small Japanese city of Rikuzentakata throughout the late 70’s and 80’s. While the label has lain dormant for some time, the Johnny’s catalogue has been given a new lease of life by Studio Mule in the past couple of years. This latest reissue is another Japanese jazz gem. 1982’s Gogo Sanji No Aki is a lovely collection of ballads sung by Mayumi Sonoda. Backed by the Kichiro Sugino Trio, Sonoda delivers a set of smoky standards in both English and Japanese.
