Labelle follows up last year’s intriguing univers-ile LP for InFine with a four-track EP. Post-Maloya is less of a title and more of an artistic statement by the Reunion Islander. Maloya is a traditional style native to his home, and Labelle brings it together with techno, sound art, ambient loops in a very unique manner. While many of the textures in this music are quiet, there is great potency to their application and things frequently do snowball into loudness. Note how opener ‘After The End’ grows from a pretty, twinkling loop into a potent rhythm track, while the pummelling rhythms of ‘Kabar’ could be mistaken for industrial techno. ‘Jaojoby’ is a quick dance tune pitched somewhere between Brainfeeder and Principe.
