Another round of sloppy goodness from Alpha Pup (Jonwayne, Nosaj Thing). Woolymammoth is a San Francisco beatmaker and Filling Spots is his debut LP. Over the fifteen cuts here he proves an adept and somewhat unusual producer. While his style clearly owes a big debt to the Brainfeeder and Stones Throw schools, what makes Woolymammoth stand out is his willingness to lob grit and distortion into his mixes. The grizzled basslines on ‘Shadeslove’ and ‘Maktar’ sound like mutants spawned from Dead Prez’s ‘Hip Hop’.
