Always one to keep his fans guessing, this latest effort from Matias Aguayo sees him heading down another rabbit hole. Flanked by new group The Desdemonas, Aguayo works the channels of krautrock, coldwave, goth and Joy Division-style post-punk to create a murky, booming album. The journey through Sofarnopolis is an eerie one. Loping lo-fi grooves set the scene on most tracks, and atop this Aguayo delay-drenched vocals lead the listener down ever-more erstwhile avenues. There is a link to his minimal techno background in the propulsive hypnoticism of the grooves on tracks like ‘Cold Fever’ and ‘Boogie Drums’, but the overall effect of Sofarnopolis is more visceral, immediate and thrilling.
