Jane Weaver and her heady brand of neo-kosmische is back with her ninth solo album. Combining early-70s psych grooves, Krautrock, golden-age analog experimentalism and a singer’s knack for songcraft, the ten tracks of Modern Kosmology have a timeless feel to them. The likes of opening gambit ‘H>A>K’ and ‘The Architect’ sound like Kraftwerk and Dusty Springfield let loose in the studio together. Elsewhere ‘Did You See the Butterflies?’ and ‘Slow Motion’ are grade-A psychedelia, both excellent pop songs that would do well in any decade. Several of the tracks on the album’s second half - closer ‘I Wish’, for example - also have a nice Goldfrapp-y retro vibe to them.
