London-based techno connoisseur Moiré revives the spirit of the punk movement with his second full-length No Future. After his 2014 debut album Shelter on Werk/Ninja Tune he went on to release EPs on labels of similar calibre, including R&S and Spectral Sound, the dancefloor-oriented sister label of Ghostly International via which this album arrives.

Created in response to the hateful climate resulting from the political events of 2016, No Future radiates the warm, welcoming atmosphere of a leftfield techno album. Interlocking patterns and shuffling rhythms, Moiré deploys his signature hardware sound, which – as he proves like never before – lends itself to being a backdrop for vocalists: first up is the sick flows of the legendary Soul:r & Soul:ution resident MC DRS, while South London poet James Massiah stand bail for it with their contributions.

Albeit Moiré likens the current feeling of the carpet being pulled from beneath our feet to the hopelessness of the punk era, his lo-fi beats follow a steady drive with a stoic, yet urgent sense of “keep going” – from the sub-heavy ‘Opium’ with its imprecise claps and a-tonal injections to ‘Secret Window’ with its metallic percussion in the distance and ‘System 100’s’ grainy, reverberant thuds. ‘Casual’s’ optimistic loop might be subdued, hiding underneath claps, hi-hats and 808 cowbells. But it’s there. We just have to focus on it.
