Run by Stu Evans and Emily MacLaren, Glasgow’s Green Door Studios have become quite the cultural institution over the past few years, and it seems as if Optimo have taken it upon themselves to be the prime distributor of anything and everything of musical interest to come out of them. Thankfully the standards are extremely high, and past releases from Whilst, MR TC, Junto Club and Golden Teacher have taken the music far from the confines of the city in which it was crafted and ensured Green Door a worldwide audience. The Number 1 is the latest project to emerge from the hidden lane and is the musical outlet of Hannan Jones and Murray Collier, two artists hailing from both Australia and the west coast of Scotland respectively. Percussive yet playful punk funk vibes are channelled throughout the five tracks, with the highlight ‘When I Get It Right’ quickly morphing from its awkward and stuttering beginning into an irresistible groove primed for loosening up your joints to on a dark, smoked out dancefloor. Thankfully this hint of awkwardness persists throughout, however, and it is quite possibly the reason the song has such a charm. For all the nerds out there, there’s also a sample from ‘Love Tempo’ by Quando Quango which is used to great effect.
