First ever vinyl pressing of long out of print Folklore Tapes split cassette from Finders Keepers associates Magpahi and Paper Dollhouse, the original tape was issued in 2012 inside a hollowed-out hardback book, which is recreated here in a deluxe twin 10" pressing, housed inside a full print gatefold sleeve with extended artwork and essays on folklore rituals and practices and featuring original artwork designed by label head, David Chatton Barker.
Folklore Tapes turn the page on the next chapter of their research reissue series with this split album-of-sorts, on the first 10" Magpai revisits her crystallised folk sound first explored on her Natural Lancashire/Supernatural Lancashire album with six tracks of beautifully composed folk songs, that are riddled with an exhausted eerie atmosphere, it's collar up and cloak on as it sets out to explore the practices of witches from within the rich folkloric history of Devon. There is an aching sadness at the heart of each of these pieces that recalls the more melancholy sounds of Nico's BBC sessions issued on Gear Box a few months back, drifting between piano-led ballads and wordless sirens laid forth on a cold night in Anworth, perfect folkloric sonic and electronic drone. Paper Dollhouse follow suit with a long form track that slowly looks through the glass to build upon the duo's gothic folk album A Box Painted Black (released around the same time on Jane Weavers Bird imprint) the duo's entry is composed around a startlingly hallucinatory and cold, icy piece entitled Cemetry I that continues the winter-laden night time exploration with half-heard voices resonating through the mist before moving into a reverb-drenched lullaby. They continue to drift through the deepest corners of the forrest before ending in an area more mapped out to be the woods surrounding Twin Peaks than the stone circle laden hills of Devon. Rituals and Practices is possibly the darkest entry yet in the Folklore Tapes saga and leaves more questions left asked than answered. Enigmatic and haunting, Rituals & Practices is a truly searching record.
