New Zealand indie outfit The Chills break their 19-year hiatus with a stunning return to the fray on their fifth Studio LP entitled Silver Bullets. After a somewhat turbulent period, including a confessed drug addition, hepatitis and liver cirrhosis, front man Martin Phillipps still manages to conjure up strikingly rich, warm tones from both voice and guitar. Setting the scene with the operatic opener ‘Father Time’, ‘Warm Waveforms’ builds on the reverb drenched atmosphere with deft guitar picks darting between the casual drumming and Phillipps’ warm, melodic vocals adding a snug, fuzzy glow. Pieces such as ‘America Says Hello’ and ‘Aurora Corona’ revert back to a livelier, more classic rock n’ roll mould; whist ‘Tom Boy’ strips back the instrumentation to leave the exposed vocals to lead the way, building to a rousing finale.
