The latter years Mercury Rev continue to furnish their catalogue with gorgeous alt-pop songs on The Light In You. While the record might not be as overtly experimental or left-field as their earlier releases, the cuts which make this album up are testament to a songwriting duo who still have a wealth of ideas. Jonathan Donahue’s inimitable vocal rests atop rich production swathed in bells and typical Bella Union lushness. The album journeys from hands-in-the-air choruses like You’ve Gone With So Little for So Long to deeply reflective swells like Rainy Day Record. Marking their first full-length in 7 years, Mercury Rev do not disappoint.
