Woodstock beat producer Evan Shornstein debuts with his self-titled full-length as Photay on Brooklyn-based Astro Nautico. His love for polyrhythmic percussion was born during a trip to West Africa: he combines djembé sounds and stumbling rhythms with heavy shoving synths, analogue with digital and field recordings with sampling techniques. This results in playful textures driven by groovy wind instruments and catchy pitch-shifting melodies. Matthew Young’s reverberant falsetto vocals are so beautifully subtle that they almost disappear into the instrumental mixture. This is an infectious debut.
