For their third album, New York indie rockers Cymbals Eat Guitars sign to London’s Tough Love Records. Mastered by Kurt Vile and Sonic Youth producer John Agnello, Lose follows their signature sound of great melodies and hymnal choruses, but all laced with feelings of nostalgia and melancholy. The lyrics document frontman Joseph D’Agostino coming to terms with the death of his friend and long-time collaborator Benjamin High. ‘Laramie’s’ accentuated rhythms bring out D’Agostino’s falsetto at best. The swaying waltz of ‘2 Hip Soul’ longs for a long-gone time when their dreams were still believable, and the uptempo ‘XR’ mourns the loss of their childhood faith in the power of rock’n’roll. The subject matter might not be the happiest, but they make it sound very good.
