Astral Black’s introductory tape series puts forward a strong taster debut from Manchester-based producer Opal Block ahead of a 2014 single for the label. ‘Tyson’ is a hyperactive collection of dance floor material which allies a passion for analogue rave with the wild hip-hop diversions one might associate with Hudson Mohawke and Rustie. ‘Kicking the Moon Across the Sky’ combines a crazed mixture of 8-bit synths, MIDI brass fanfares and slamming trap beats, while ‘Dry Roasted Carpet’ segways Russell Haswell siren madness into a smoother hip-hop roll. A very promising debut.
