And so, after twenty years, James Leyland Kirby brings down the curtain on The Caretaker. Kirby’s Everywhere At The End Of Time series is the final act of the project which has dictated the state of play in ambient and hauntological music more than perhaps any other in the 21st Century, and Stage 6 is the last piece of the puzzle. With The Caretaker now consumed by dementia, it is unsurprising to find the recordings here cloaked in heavy fogs of static. The cold, eerie soundscapes find The Caretaker’s musical memories - including those of his own back catalogue - jumbled and struggling for air. Stage 6 is a strangely beautiful collection, and one that is a fitting full stop on a hugely impressive body of work.
