Following his previous two albums that saw him move to pristine ambience and synthesis, Phantom Limb boss James Vella AKA A Lily presents his latest album Saru l-Qamar, an emotive exercise in exploring his Maltese lineage. Built from archival recordings of traditional għana songs through which Maltese emigrants delivered news back home, the album pairs arresting balladry with fluttering, rippling synth layers. Each recording takes on a cinematic stature as Vella orchestrates them, reimagining these solo fragments of history into full compositions, with vocals and shimmers drifting in and out of ‘Erba' Aħwa’ before coalescing in a pearlescent haze.
