Delightfully spiralling and unpredictable right off the bat, Hakushi Hasegawa’s debut release Somoku Hodo put the Japanese artist on the map with their sprawling storm of jazz, breakcore, and pop experimentations. Whether through live instrumentation or dextrously dissected samples and synths, Hasegawa constructs an infectious kaleidoscopic overload. A trumpet solo flutters over keys and drums stuttering to an incessant rhythm on ‘Somoku’, immediately flipped over by furious breaks forcing their way through sparkling synth chimes on ‘Doku’, while ‘Cue’ shines with the pixelated bubblegum atmosphere of J pop.
