Willie Burns returns with a new side project, Black Deer, distinguishing itself nicely from his frankly brilliant rugged house experiments on labels such as L.I.E.S. and The Trilogy Tapes. ‘Trail of Tears’ hears Burns exploring the Apache undergrowth with a beguiling narrative set of four numerically titled tracks. With a diverse approach that nestles neatly somewhere in between post-punk and new-age psychedelia, we hear chugging motorik rhythms alongside more wistfully evocative soundscapes and swirling guitar licks.
