Toro Y Moi returns to the Dead Oceans label for a new EP of pastoral folk-pop entitled Sandhills. Written as something like a love letter to his native Columbia, South Carolina, Sandhills sees Toro revisiting the more homespun and self-recorded earlier days of the project, with tracks like the high school football tale ‘Sidelines’ positively buzzing with room sounds, string bites, and tape hiss. It’s not all rosy coloured, as the subtly heartbreaking title track bristles against the otherness felt growing up Black in the South, but Sandhills is ultimately a charming and nostalgic side step for a project that always seems to move forward.
