Beloved Japanese psychedelic rock band Kikagaku Moyo come back down to earth one last time for their fifth and final LP on Guruguru Brain entitled Kumoyo Island. The band has traversed many planes across their decade long career, seeming to wade out further and further with each release. In some ways, Kumoyo Island is then their most succinct effort yet, doling out their abstractions and circuitous melodies in more controlled bursts while keeping run times fairly short by their usual metrics. Do not mistake concision for conservatism though, as tracks like ‘Cardboard Pie’ and ‘Yayoi, Iyayoi’ find Kikagaku Moyo still very much on the attack, even in their twilight.
